I almost can’t believe my own audacity when I decided to paint this subject! It’s very complicated; there are a lot of straight lines, arches and a great big circle in the middle. I’m not sure what came over me, but this felt like a stretch I had to try.
This painting is based on a visit to Truro Cathedral, back in 2023, to see the Gaia installation. There was something about the huge earth hanging suspended within the gothic arches of the cathedral which really caught my attention. The clash between the tall arches, subtlety lit in blue, against the vision of the world pulling focus.
The phrase “It’s a small world,” spoken lightly in everyday conversation, takes on new meaning as we see the illuminated Gaia installation framed within Truro Cathedral.
If you look at the last picture you can see someone having their photo taken, the classic forced perspective photography, often used when people ‘lean’ on the leaning Tower of Pisa, in this case it will look like the person has ‘the whole world in his hands’ in the photo. A little moment I couldn’t resist adding in.
