"Sent to Coventry" is a striking painting that captures the ethereal beauty of Coventry Cathedrals under a blanket of night. On the left we have the old Cathedral, rising from the ruins of war, bathed and silhouetted in the soft, ethereal glow of a couple of streetlights. To the right is the stark and stunning modernity of the newer Cathedral, built as a symbol of honour and homage to our scars, a symbol of reconciliation and peace.
The title "Sent to Coventry" evokes the city’s layered history, referencing not only the cathedral’s past destruction and rebirth but also the historical notion of being 'sent to Coventry', isolated or cast away, suggesting resilience, redemption, and quiet contemplation. I like to think that my figures in my painting are doing just that as they admire the buildings in front of them.
