The lattice of iron gleam like embers from a long-extinguished forge
Under the cloak of night, Iron Bridge glows in a rich red hue, its cast iron curves standing bold against the darkened sky, the lattice of iron gleam like embers from a long-extinguished forge. Built in 1779 this was the first of its kind; an audacious vision of progress, made in cast iron it changed the course of history, marked a turning point in the Industrial Revolution and is now a famous industrial monument giving its name to the town that grew around it.
There was talk of dismantling and selling the bridge for scrap during the 1960s, but was saved by the English Heritage. Now, bathed in crimson light, it stands as a bridge between past and present, a silent witness to centuries of change. The phrase “water under the bridge” is whispered in the flow of the Severn. It speaks of things passed, not to diminish their importance but to remind us to also look to the future. While the water may pass beneath, the industrial beauty of the bridge's steady presence lingers; a relic and a beacon of human potential, hope, boldness and strength.
